Item Code: G3138

This specimen is a .58 caliber Model 1861 percussion rifle-musket dated 1862 in very good ‘in the black’ condition. Produced by the Federal armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, the musket retains its original stock, original nipple and bolster screw, swell-shaped ramrod, all barrel bands, swivel sling hooks and triggerguard. Interestingly the swivel on this original triggerguard has been placed on backwards. All gunmetal heavily rusted from storage and never cleaned. Black walnut stock is original with no cracks or repairs but shows normal dings and dents.

Lock plate stamped “SPRINGFIELD” in front of the “C”-shaped hammer under the bolster and “1862” behind hammer. Has original nipple that has been eroded from rust. Just traces of eagle motif visible on the lockplate as well as the letters “U S” almost rusted away. All screws good, not buggered up. Date stamp on the top flat has pitted away but still retains traces of the proofmarks. Mechanics are good.

Black walnut stock, in good condition overall, has never been cleaned. Two light inspector cartouches still visible on the flat opposite the hammer. No cracks in the wood. Some light dings and dents visible on the stock. Swelled shank steel ramrod is original but the tip has been broken off and replaced with a modified claw hook to retrieve any misfired lead musket ball. Musket has its two leaf rear sight and all barrel bands stamped with “U” are aligned on their band spring. A great, untouched, veteran Model 1861 Springfield musket.
