Cal. 58 “Springfield” manufactured at the Springfield Armory. The lock surface is a gun metal / plum patina. Markings “Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date “1862”remain legible. Crisp working lockwork. All other iron surfaces are also gum metal / plum with areas of light surface rust. The barrel is from a contract musket. The barrel markings visible is the date “1863” and the “VP” and inspectors initials “GT” at the end of the barrel. The rear sight is functional but one leaf has been shortened. The ramrod is original. Bore is smooth and is lightly rusted. The stock has been refinished and has some nicks and gouges. The inspector’s cartouche located on the opposite side of the lockplate is not present. The Model ‘61” Springfield was the standard musket in use during the Civil War with 265,129 manufactured. If you only have one Civil War firearm for your collection it should be a 61 or 62 dated Springfield. Nice example of an inexpensive Civil War musket.
