$1,100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3268

This is a fine condition, original Model 1866 US breechloading rifle musket with the Allin Conversion, a.k.a. the ‘Second Model Allin’ Trapdoor. In 1866, the Springfield Armory altered existing M1863 percussion muskets to a .50 caliber, centerfire rifle and employed the distinctive trapdoor breechblock loading system. The 2nd Model differed from the First Model by using a longer bolt, a firing pin spring, and a stronger internal extraction system that dispensed with the rack and pinion type. Some 25,000 M1863 muskets were altered by the armory in 1866.

Breech is stamped “1866” over an eagle’s head at the front hinge of the loading system. Lockplate marked in front of hammer with spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD.” Behind the hammer shows “1863.” Lockplate and hammer exhibit a dark gray patina. Rifle barrel measures 40” long with an excellent bore that shows clean, strong three-groove rifling. Barrel has been cleaned at one time and exhibits a dull gray coloring with light pinprick rust pitting overall. Original rear sight. Has its three, iron barrel bands with band springs. Bands marked with sub inspector stamps. Steel ramrod has the ribbed and slotted head and screws into the base. All metal surfaces show light cleaning. Mechanics crisp.

The walnut stock exhibits a rich, dark coloring with scattered minor dings, dents and nicks as normal with age and use. One old repair on left side of stock forward from the flat and behind the rear sight. Entire stock is in very good condition with nice edges A single, strong cartouche is stamped on the left side behind the lockplate screws. All mountings standard including the swivels at the middle band and trigger guard. Overall, this ‘Second Allin’ musket alteration to rifle is a very good specimen.
