Item Code: 218-439

This original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket is in very good condition overall. Made by the Springfield Armory, circa 1861-1862, a total of over 265,000 units were produced in those years. A .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader dated 1862, this longarm is in very good condition overall. Barrel has a dark, pitted surface area at the breech and bolster with a mottled light and dark plum gray coloring throughout. Breech date is pitted away. Upper area of barrel appears to have a thin coating of sealant in places. Musket is complete and retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, “C” shaped hammer, swell-shaped ramrod, barrel bands, sling hooks, and butt strap. Retains the original two-leaf rear sight.

Black walnut stock in very good condition overall with just normal dings and nicks from age and use, no cracks or repairs. Traces of two cartouches, almost gone, are visible at the lower right flat opposite the hammer. Stock flat shows worn edges consistent with service. Lockplate nicely stamped with a spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” motif front of hammer. A strong, sharp “1862” date stamped on lockplate behind the C-shaped hammer. Left facet of breech area double-stamped with government proof marks “V / P / eagle head,” but very worn. The weapon’s original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod rests in the groove in the forend of the stock; threaded tip has worn away. Mechanics very good.
