This handsome, Kentucky-style, single-trigger, muzzle loading, half-stock hunting rifle was the property of one A. J. Sutherland of Ann Arbor, Michigan in the post war years. In 1868, Sutherland was a realtor and insurance agent for the New York Life Insurance Co in Ann Arbor, MI. His civilian-style hunting rifle specimen is identified with his name “A. J. Sutherland / Ann Arbor” stamped on the barrel breech in small block letters.
Of .46 caliber, the rifled barrel measures 31¼” long and is mated to a fine, black walnut stock with brass furniture including its scrolled triggerguard, butt plate, side plate, three ramrod tubes, a locking key, front blade sight and three decorative brass hunting motifs inlaid in both sides of the stock. Stock wrist area also has a small, inlaid brass escutcheon with initials “L B H” engraved on it. Decorative engraving is also seen on the triggerguard, butt plate and hammer. A heavy octagonal steel barrel rests on the walnut stock and is secured with two brass keys and a single brass pin. Stock nose cap is pewter. The flat hammer and the lockplate are lightly engraved and decorated with a hunting scene and light floral flourishes.
The black walnut half stock suffers from old repairs at the brass keys and pin area with what appears to be a filler material. Some light surface cracks are also visible as is minor wood erosion at the bolster area. Just a few light dings from age and use. Lockplate is flat and flush to the stock. The 31¼” long octagonal barrel wears a pleasing dark plum / brown patina with scattered light rust pitting. The notched long-range rear sight is intact. Rifle retains its straight-shank wood ramrod. Mechanics poor and hold no half or full cock. Need work. A good looking, mid to late 19th century civilian hunting rifle.
