Item Code: 172-3328

1828 dated example of the Model 1816 .69 caliber smooth bore musket manufactured at the National Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This specimen is still in its original flintlock configuration. The barrel is a full 42” in length and the original button head ramrod (intended for use with the .69 caliber round ball) is present also. Barrel proof markings are visible at the breech area:  F over P over US lettering. No date is visible on the breech tang. Other inspector’s markings are two stamped letters of: V W located on the body of the hammer and W on the hammer screw. Stock inspector markings located just opposite the side screw plate looks to be an undecipherable mark over the letter V in vertical position; the same mark, in the horizontal position, is stamped at the tail end of the flat surface. There is one other mark stamped into the stock located just below the trigger guard tang, the letter W.

Overall Condition: Metallic surfaces of the barrel, bands, lock, ramrod & trigger guard all exhibit scattered peppery pitting with a grouping of dings located on the barrels surface just below the lower band and on top of the barrel above the proof markings. The mechanics of the lock on half cock and full cock are crisp and near perfect. Frizzen action is strong and tight as well.

Walnut stock is smooth with only a 1 ½” fragment missing along the ramrod channel below the second barrel band and four dents (two located on ether sides of the ramrod channel) above the missing wood. No cracks or fissures noted to the wrist or around the lock mortise area or butt.  However, there is a name carved into the butt cheek on the right side: WHITTY but there is no known association with this Musket. Also, stamped just above the tang of the butt plate in the stock is the number 36 which might represent a rack number assignment.

A nice example of a pre-conversion period musket.
