MODEL 1866 ALLIN CONVERSION RIFLE

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-622

This M1863 Springfield percussion rifle musket, once a muzzleloader, was altered to a breechloading rifle using the Erskin S. Allin design. The conversion was completed at the Springfield Armory circa 1866. A total of some 25,000 percussion muskets were altered to a 50-caliber center fire rendition by inserting a liner tube in the barrel. The breech was also converted to the distinctive ‘trapdoor” breechblock. Finishes were the same as the model 1863 muskets.

Lockplate markings show Eagle motif in front of hammer with “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD.” The date “1865” is stamped behind the hammer. On the forward breech of the trapdoor is an “Eagle / 1866.” This conversion rifle has a dusty light gray patina overall on all the iron parts. Crisp mechanics. Retains its ramrod. Bore has good rifling and a dusty bright finish. Original stock bears a dark brown patina with few nicks and scratches from use. Flat has worn edges and no inspector cartouches are visible. Retains its two-leaf rear sight as well as its iron front sight.

A nice example of the 2nd Model Allin conversion Model 1866 Springfield rifle.
