$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3158

This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in good condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army.

Musket measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. The barrel surface is dusky plum coloring and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting and some light scratches. Barrel breech and bolster area both exhibits light to moderate pitting from percussion cap ignition. Lockplate wears a dark gray patina with standard markings of the Victoria “crown” back of the hammer and sharp, block letters “1862 / TOWER”. Hammer is missing its lock screw. Crown device shows wear and there are no initials “VR” below device. Mechanics are crisp. View / proof marks in one line are clear on the barrel near the left breech and shows “proof - 25 – proof - 25 – proof.”

Just over 500,000 Pattern 1853 muskets were purchased / imported by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War. Specimen has a bore that is dark and dirty with scattered rust oxidation. Brass butt plate missing one stock screw. No markings visible. Black walnut stock is strong and shows rounded edges on the flat. Surface is uncleansed. One ¾” long crack visible in front of the second lockplate screw on the flat. Both sling swivels are missing. Musket retains the original ramrod. A dated 1862 Enfield British Pattern model 1853 Rifled Musket.
