Presented in an outstanding condition is this Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle produced by the Remington arms firm of Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. Of some 12,500 such firearms produced, this .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloader in excellent overall condition. The longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

This government-marked Zouave rifle measures 49” long with a 33” barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two, brass barrel bands. Bore is minty and features bright, strong seven-groove rifling. Barrel retains its original bluing while the lockplate and hammer both hold very good, original case colors. A two-leaf rear sight and a pinched, front blade sight rest atop the barrel muzzle. A large bayonet lug is welded to the barrel’s right side and to fit the Remington saber bayonet, not included. Left side of barrel breech shows the strong proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” just before the barrel tang. Top barrel breech exhibits the date “1863.” Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks “R.K.A.” and “STEEL”.

Lockplate exhibits a highly detailed spreadwinged eagle under the bolster with marks “U.S.” directly below. Maker’s stamp, “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” strongly marked in front of eagle. Strong date “1863” behind the hammer. Sub-inspector marks visible on some components. All furniture, including butt plate, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patchbox, are brass and uncleaned with a mellow bronze patina. Patchbox still has its spare nipple.

Walnut stock is excellent save for just a few small storage dings and dents overall. Two, very clear, very sharp government cartouches rest on the flat opposite the hammer and the stock’s flat still retains sharp edges. All screws not buggered. Longarm has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and threaded tip along with the two steel swivels at the triggerguard and upper band. Mechanics are very crisp. A very fine, handsome collectible Civil War musket.
