Here is an original, seldom-seen, Model 1861 .58 caliber “Union Arms Company” contract percussion rifle-musket in very good condition overall. Musket was a product of the Union Arms Company of New York City, circa 1862-1863. With an estimated quantity of some 300 muskets per the government contract, this single-shot muzzleloader, dated 1863, was very possibly manufactured by the Parker, Snow and Brooks Co of Meriden, Connecticut.

Longarm retains a pleasing appearance and appears not to have been cleaned. Barrel exhibits a mottled salt & pepper surface with pinprick pitting and dark oxidation areas overall. Barrel breech has pitting and the date is pitted away. Musket is complete and retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, “C” shaped hammer, swell-shaped ramrod, all barrel bands, sling hooks, and butt strap. Breech area near nipple and bolster area reflects pitting from use.

Black walnut stock is in very good condition overall with normal dings and nicks from age and use. No cartouches visible on the flat opposite the hammer. Flat shows worn edges with one ½” long surface crack at the upper lock screw. Lightly pitted lockplate nicely stamped with a spreadwinged eagle / U.S. motif front of hammer. Stamping “U. A. CO. / NEW YORK” under the bolster. “1863” date-stamped on lockplate behind the C-shaped hammer. Left facet of breech area stamped with government proof marks “V / P / eagle head” heavily worn. The weapon’s original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod rests in the groove in the forend of the stock; threaded tip has worn away. Mechanics very good.
