Item Code: 218-436

This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber “Springfield” Model 1863, Type 1, single-shot muzzleloader in complete, excellent overall condition. The Springfield M1863 Type 1 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. This type musket was produced with no barrel springs. Over two hundred seventy thousand such longarm weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Dept during the war years.

Barrel exterior has been cleaned and exhibits light pin prick pitting at the breech and overall. Lock surface wears a dark mottled patina with honest age and wear. “1864” strongly stamped behind the hammer. Lock markings with the “Eagle / US” / SPRINGFIELD” are sharp and clear in front of the hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer with its chamfered, beveled edges has the same smooth patina as the rest of the lock plate components. Breech area of the barrel shows the date “1864” clear on the top facet. Proofmarks are sharp and clean on the barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight.

Mechanics crisp. Bore is strong and semi-bright with a dusty look. Retains its original steel straight-shank ramrod that has the threaded tip. Black walnut stock very fine and appears never to have been cleaned. Has a few light dings and scratches normal with age and use. No cracks or repairs visible. Two government inspector cartouches seen on the flat opposite the hammer. A fine representative Springfield type-1 rifle-musket of the Civil War.
