CLASSIC COLT MODEL 1861 ‘SPECIAL’ MUSKET, DATED 1863

$1,850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 173-2162

This original Civil War shoulder arm is a Colt Model 1861 ‘Special’ musket made from 1861 to 1865 under government contract by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used in the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.

Longarm, which is in very good condition, is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel and three barrel bands. The lockplate surface is medium gray. Lock markings are the standard Colt Special markings with “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT” thin but clear. Dated “1863” in strong numerals behind the hammer.

Barrel surface appears to have been cleaned long ago and wears a semi-bright mottled finish overall with just scattered areas of light peppery oxidation. Barrel markings shows sharp proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” on the barrel breech left facet and a sharp matching date “1863” on the barrel tang. Barrel breech also shows inspector markings “F.E.M.” on left edge. Barrel retains the standard two leaf rear sight and screw-type barrel bands.

Deep spreadwinged eagle on bolster below the nipple. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the upper band. Black walnut stock is in excellent, untouched condition and shows old minor dents, dings and gouges consistent with age and use. Flat opposite the hammer has slightly smooth edges. Lock screws all original and not buggered up. Mechanics are crisp. Bore is shiny bright with strong rifling. Has its original straight shank ramrod. A fine Model 1861 Colt Special musket.
