Presented in mint condition is this Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle made by the Remington arms firm of Ilion, New York between 1862 and 1865. 12,500 of these .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloaders were produced. They were rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.
This “US” marked Zouave rifle measures 49” long with a 33” barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two, brass barrel bands. Bore is mint and features bright, strong seven-groove rifling. Barrel retains its original bluing while the lockplate and hammer both retain very good case colors. A two-leaf rear sight and a blade pinched front sight rest atop the barrel while a large bayonet lug is welded to the barrel’s right side and to fit the Remington saber bayonet. Left side of barrel breech shows strong proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” just before the barrel tang. Top area of breech exhibits the date “1863” and “U S” in line with the barrel tang. Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks “H.S.L.” and ‘STEEL’.
Lockplate exhibits a highly detailed spreadwinged eagle under the bolster with marks “U.S.” directly below. “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” strongly stamped in front of eagle. Strong date “1863” behind the hammer. All furniture, including butt plate, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patchbox, is brass. Patchbox still has the spare nipple inside. Major components show sub-inspector marks. Full walnut stock is excellent save for just a few small storage dings and dents. Wood edges appear sharp as do the edges of the stock flat. Two, very clear, very sharp government cartouches rest on the flat opposite the hammer. Longarm has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and threaded tip along with steel swivels, one at the triggerguard and the second at the upper band. Mechanics are very crisp and strong
