Often referred to as the ‘Mississippi Rifle’ this shoulder arm is a U.S. percussion rifle, Model 1841 made by the Eli Whitney firm in New Haven, Connecticut. This single-shot, muzzleloader percussion-rifled musket is one of some 26,500 produced under four government contracts from 1843 to 1855. The .54 caliber longarm has the 33” long round barrel secured to the stock via two barrel bands and band springs. Barrel breech bears worn markings “P C / P” and a single worn letter “C” on the left facet. Barrel muzzle not adapted for the bayonet.

A handsome musket, all furniture including the bands, triggerguard, patchbox and ramrod tip are brass. The original browned factory finish is completely gone as the metal has all been cleaned and exhibits a dull gray surface with salt and pepper rust pitting overall. Pitting heavier at the breech and bolster area. Barrel equipped with open sights. Front sight has the brass pinched blade. Lockplate has no case colors and exhibits a heavily cleaned face and hammer. Plate features “E. WHITNEY / U S” forward of the hammer and “N. HAVEN / 1847” to the rear. Markings are clear but thin. All brass has been cleaned at one time but is reacquiring a mellow bronze patina.

Stock is oil finished and exhibits a pleasing patina, smooth and hard. Has normal dings and dents from use and storage. One light crack on left side of stock at upper sideplate. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Rifling is strong with some pitting and light grime. Retains its original swivels. Original steel ramrod with its tapered brass head. The well-made Model 1841 percussion rifle performed as a “Good and Serviceable Arm” for the US military and later for the Confederacy. Here is a veteran ‘Mississippi’ percussion rifle in very good condition overall.
