Item Code: 173-2189

A fine specimen of a M1816 musket dated 1838 and produced by the Springfield Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts. This original, 69 caliber flintlock longarm was once converted to percussion, and then converted back to cap and ball. The single shot, 42” long, round barrel muzzleloader is in very good condition. All gunmetal has been heavily cleaned and exhibits a shiny light gray sheen overall. Upper barrel area shows scattered pitting.

The 6¾” long lockplate has a 3-line marking that reads “SPRING / FIELD / 1838” behind the hammer. Front of hammer is the early “American eagle motif / US” in front. Lock has the detachable brass flashpan. Mountings iron. Barrel secured via three iron bands and three band springs. Barrel breech marked with “P (within a small oval) / eaglehead / V.” Also on the breech area are stampings “B 20” and “6 6.” Barrel tang dated “1838” and also has the mark “B 20” below. The cock, battery (frizzen), battery springs, pan, and screws are original and are in good condition. Comes with original flint in the jaw.

The lightly cleaned black walnut full stock is in very good condition with no repairs or blemishes. Right side of shoulder stock has two 1” high initials scratched in that show “E T.” Iron buttplate tang is marked with the horizontal “US”. Mechanics are very tight and crisp. The three-grove rifled bore is clean with light rust pitting that would clean up to bright. Button-shaped ramrod is in good original condition and retains the treaded tip. All other iron components are good with screws sharp and not buggered up. This reconverted U. S. M1816 musket would surely make a nice addition to any military collection of American longarms.
