This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 Type 1 rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in wonderful condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army.  Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. The lockplate surface is dusky gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. Lock markings are the standard Victoria’s “crown” back of the hammer and numbers & block letters “1862 / TOWER.” Mechanics are strong. Barrel surface not cleaned and wears a pleasing dusky mottled gray patina. Breech and bolster area shows moderate to heavy pitting. Viewer’s marks are clear on the barrel breech. Over 500,000 Pattern 1853 muskets were also purchased / imported by the US Ordnance Department during the Civil War. Specimen’s bore is clean with just scattered hints of rust oxidation. All brass furniture exhibits a pleasing mellow patina. Black walnut stock is strong with a surface that is dark and lightly cleaned.  No cracks but stock does show minor dings and a 1” x 1” sliver of wood chipped off the bottom at buttplate.
