Item Code: G3390

This original Civil War shoulder arm in good overall condition is a Colt Model 1861 ‘Special’ musket made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used during the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.

Longarm is a percussion, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel and three iron barrel bands. No band springs. Lockplate markings standard Colt Special markings with “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT.” Dated “1864” in strong clear numerals behind the hammer. All markings sharp but thin. Spreadwinged eagle stamped on bolster below the nipple. No hints of original case colors. All gun metal has been cleaned to a pleasing light gray luster. Barrel wears a smooth semi-bright finish. Barrel markings shows very deep and clear proof marks “V / P/ eaglehead” on the barrel breech facet and a sharp matching date “1863” stamped deeply on the barrel tang. Original ramrod very good. Retains its threaded tip and has a reproduction tampion plug. Musket exhibits the standard, blued two-leaf rear sight and three screw-type barrel bands. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the middle band.

Black walnut stock is in good original condition and shows scattered dents and small gouges as normal. Stock flat opposite the hammer shows worn smooth edges and exhibits two, thin government inspector cartouches. Lock screws all original and not buggered up. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Bore is bright and shows excellent rifling. Various components exhibit sub-inspector marks. A classic M1861 Colt Special musket in good overall condition.
