This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1862, is in complete, very fine condition. Produced at the Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA, the musket retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, swell-shaped ramrod, barrel bands, and swivel sling hooks. The 40” long barrel surface appears to have not been cleaned. Surface exhibits just few scattered areas of very light pitting that is cleaned bright. Barrel, lockplate, C-shaped hammer, butt plate, bands, retaining springs, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod all wear a pleasing, smooth light gray sheen. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / BRIDESBURG” in front of the hammer and strongly stamped “1862” behind hammer. A sharp and detailed spreadwinged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster.
Steel butt plate strongly stamped with “U S”. Musket also exhibits sub-inspector marks on major components. Has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel date stamp “1862” on the breech top flat is strong and deep. Barrel bore has minty rifling. All lock screws, even the bolster screw, are excellent with no buggering. Government proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” on left facet of the breech are deep and sharp. A small sub-inspector mark is adjacent to the proof letter P. Mechanics are crisp.
Black walnut full stock is in suburb condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits two government cartouches on the flat. No cracks or blemishes in the wood save some tiny dings and dents from use and storage. Retains its steel, swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded tip, all in excellent condition.
A very fine representative Bridesburg contract musket of the Civil War.
