CUTDOWN HARPER’S FERRY MODEL 1841 HALL RIFLE - POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE ALTERATION

This weapon started life at the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal as a rifle but was at some point cut-down to carbine length.

The overall length of the weapon is 44.50 inches with a round .54 barrel that meas. approx. 24.50 inches long. The surface of the barrel is semi-bright with heavy mottling and light surface pitting. Front sight is mortised to the barrel and consists of a long blade while the rear sight is mortised just forward of the receiver and has an off-center notch. Barrel is held to the stock by two iron bands with the upper band having the sling swivel attached.

The casehardened breech has turned dark overall. Original nipple is present with moderate pitting around the base. Hammer is dark and operates properly. Forward section of breech is stamped “H. FERRY / U S / 1841” in three lines. Breech block raises and sets properly.

Stock has been refinished and wears a light brown finish. The top of the stock just behind the breech has a “U” shaped closed crack. There is also a small sliver of wood missing where the stock meets the receiver on the right side. Stock has no visible markings. Buttplate is present as is the correct triggerguard with sling swivel. Ramrod is also present. All these iron pieces match the rest of the iron on the gun.

Bore is dirty and needs cleaning.

Overall this is a nice condition Model 1841 Hall from Harper’s Ferry.
