MODEL 1868 U.S. SPRINGFIELD ‘TRAPDOOR’ RIFLE

$700.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3490

Produced by the Springfield Armory, this .50 caliber, centerfire, cartridge weapon is one of over 51,000 made from 1868 through 1872.

The barrel surface wears a smooth semi-bright pepper like patina. Left side of barrel near the breech and the breechblock carry serial number 32392. Trapdoor operates properly and has a crisp stamping on “1870” over an eaglehead with crossed arrows and “US.” Both sights are present with the rear sight consisting of a single flip-up leaf with sliding sight adjuster. Bore has good rifling but is dirty and needs cleaned.

Hammer and lock have a mellow uneven mostly dark patina. Action is crisp but hammer screw is slightly worn. The lock has a strong stamping forward of the hammer of a spread-winged eagle over “US / SPRINGFIELD” while behind the hammer is a weak “1863.” Buttplate and triggerguard wear a patina to match the rest of the metal on the weapon. Buttplate has strong “US” on tang. Lock screws have heads that are in good condition. Same with screws on the buttplate.

Walnut stock shows scattered minor dings, dents and nicks with two small closed cracks approx. 2 ½” long at each side near the breechblock. There are no visible markings on the wood.

Weapon has two iron bands, band springs and nose cap. Both sling swivels are present as well as a broken leather Civil War era sling. Cleaning rod is also present.

Nice Indian War era longarm.
