CONTRACT US MODEL 1861 PERCUSSION RIFLE

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 516-63

This is a nice example of a Contract US Model 1861 Percussion Rifle made by Norwich Arms Co. in Norwich, Connecticut. The total quantity made was 25,000. The lock is marked “U.S. / Norwich.” Forward of hammer is marked with a wingspread eagle and is dated 1863 behind hammer. Barrel is dated 1863 with correct VP/ Eagle. All the metal is smooth, semi-bright with slight patches of age discoloration. The rifle has a .58 Cal. bore with excellent rifling and some minor pitting near last six inches. Nice walnut stock with pair of inspector’s cartouches and a partially readable oval stamp “Jas D. Mowry, Norwich Conn.” Stock has a few dings and scratches from use. A recent repair was done to the stock at the top rear adjacent to the butt plate where it is marked "US"; a pair of photos show the repair as compared to its original state. Overall, a very nice Civil War weapon.   [ss]
