MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1861, CONFEDERATE RECONDITIONED

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-881

This weapon is in nice condition and does not appear to have been cleaned or fooled with in any way.

The barrel is full length and wears a predominantly plumb brown patina as do all the metal parts of the weapon. Attached to the muzzle is an iron blade sight with a two-leaf flip-up sight near the breech. The barrel has some moderate pitting limited to the area of the bolster and top of the breech. There is no date on the barrel tang and the proof marks are no longer visible. Nipple looks to be original. Bore has good rifling with light dirt. Lock plate and hammer retain a very dark color with very minor surface crud. Below the bolster in two lines is “US” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Between this marking and the hammer is a faint spread-winged eagle. The date “1861” is strongly stamped behind the hammer. The hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls properly when trigger is squeezed. Hammer and lock plate screws look good. Walnut stock is in good condition. The buttplate, triggerguard and barrel bands all match the lock and barrel in color. Buttplate has light “US” on tang. Both sling swivels are present. Stock has no cracks and moderate dings, dents and scratches consistent with use and a gun that “was there”. There are no visible inspector’s cartouches. The ramrod is correct with the tulip head and swell but does not match is patina. Threads were cut off at lower end.

There is also a “Q” stamped in the stock ahead of the triggerguard. It has been suggested that this mark may represent the weapon being refurbished at one of the Confederate arsenals. See “The English Connection” page 118.

This is a solid example of a typical Civil War weapon that very possibly was Confederate used.   [jet]
