This original English short rifle is a British Pattern 1856 Sergeant’s Model in very good condition.  This specimen is a .577 caliber, muzzleloader that measures 48¾” long and fitted with a 33” long barrel.  Barrel is mated to a beech wood or sapwood stock.

Lockplate bears stamping of “1862” over “TOWER” with a Queen’s crown behind hammer. The lockplate surface is dark gray and exhibits a mottled peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting. No original case colors remain. Mechanics are tight and strong. Lockplate even retains the original nipple protector with its multi-linked carry chain.

Barrel surface appears to be untouched and wears a pleasing light gray mottled patina.  Has just few areas of moderate pitting to the surface. Bore is dark, dirty and pitted. Bayonet lug stamped with “10” is attached to right side of barrel. Upper swivel is mounted to the upper barrel band while the lower swivel is fastened near the toe of the buttstock. Stock is complete with all furniture including brass buttplate and triggerguard while barrel bands are iron. Original knurled and slotted ramrod still with the threaded tip. Long range folding rear sight is graduated to 1000 yards and placed well forward on the barrel.

Stock appears to be untouched.   No cracks visible but it does show numerous minor dings, dents and light scuffs from age and use.

This good condition British Pattern 1856 Sergeant’s Model 2-band rifle makes a great addition to any collection.
