The barrel on this weapon was originally finished brown but is now semi-bright with light scattered mottling and light pitting at the breech. There are also light scattered spots of oxidation throughout. Weapon has a notched rear sight with small brass blade sight at muzzle. Barrel is held to the stock by a brass double band below the muzzle and single band forward of breech. It is also fitted with a lug for affixing a saber bayonet. Bolster has the original nipple in good condition. Left side of barrel is stamped “SK” over “P.” There is no barrel date visible. Bore is smooth with no signs of rifling and is slightly dirty.

Lock is bright with light scattered pitting while hammer shows some hints of case colors. Small but strong stamping of “TRYON” over “US” forward of the hammer with “PHILADA / PA. / 1844” at rear of the hammer. Action is good but does not hold half-cock.

Walnut stock has large brass patch box on right side and brass buttplate with “US” marking. Brass escutcheon is also present opposite lock. The wood in this area also bears two faint inspector’s cartouches. Triggerguard is also of brass and both sling swivels are present. The wood of the stock is in good condition with the usual minor imperfections of small dings and scratches. Left side has a 2.00 inch closed crack extending forward from the forward most escutcheon screw. There is also a closed crack running from the barrel tang around to the back of the lockplate. Ramrod channel shows some minor, old edge chipping.

The original brass tipped ramrod is full length with threaded tip.

George W. Tryon of Philadelphia produced only 5000 of these weapons.  [ad]
