Untouched original Civil War longarm in .58 caliber manufactured by “S. Norris and W. T. Clement” in Springfield, MA. All gun metal has dark patina with the surface smooth with areas of light pitting around the breech. Lockplate markings in front of hammer show the standard “Eagle/US” markings and “S. N. & W.T.C./For/Massachusetts” very sharp and crisp. No proofmarks or date on breech visible. Light to moderate pitting around breech to rear sight, rest of barrel smooth.
Mechanics are strong and crisp. Dark untouched bore, rifling strong with light pitting. ramrod is original with some pitting around tulip end. Buttplate marked “US” on tang. One inspector’s mark visible on cheek plate. Dark walnut shows wear, and has been very lightly sanded. Has two sets of soldier’s initials “CED” & “DW” lightly carved into walnut stock. Overall stock exhibits a number of scratches and scuff marks. nice untouched rare M61 contract rifle musket. [ws]
