Item Code: G3371

Made by the J. P Moore & Sons Company of New York City, a sub-contractor for the Colt Firearms in Connecticut, this longarm specimen is a Civil War era rifle musket.

In fair to good condition overall, this musket has the British gauge (25) and viewer’s marks on the upper barrel breech. The lockplate shows the “Victoria Crown” behind the hammer and “1863” in front. This single-shot, .577 caliber, muzzleloading rifled-musket measures a total length of 55” and features a 39” long barrel mated to a black walnut stock. All metal surfaces exhibit a pleasing, dark plum-brown patina with scattered rust pitting. Missing its folding long range rear sight on barrel. Sight area appears to have been slightly damaged and repaired. Bore is almost smooth and shows moderate dirt and pitting but should clean to semi-bright.

Lockplate exhibits a dark plum coloring with clear stampings of a spreadwinged eagle atop a national shield device. The letter “M” rests on the upper part of the shield. Bolster area of barrel shows heavy pitting and pocking. Right side stock under hammer is missing a ½” x ¼” sliver of wood. Mechanics strong. Stock nose cap, buttplate, trigger guard, and lock screw washers all brass. Sling swivels are missing. Ramrod in good condition. Black walnut stock is in very good condition with a surface that is smooth overall. Has normal dings and dents. No cracks, breaks, or repairs visible. A seldom seen Moore Enfield rifle musket.  [ra]
