This Model 1816 Harpers Ferry rifled .69 caliber musket was converted from flintlock to percussion via the Belgian style alteration. This rifled, single-shot musket is in very good, attic condition overall.

Barrel wears a mottled salt & pepper coloring with no signs of pitting. Not even around the base of the nipple. Barrel is secured to the stock with three spring bands, with the lower and middle springs in front of the bands.

Bore is clean and free of surface grime. Rifling is good.

Weapon has never had a rear sight. Approx. 100 are known to have been rifled without the rear sight being added. There is a front blade sight mounted on the upper barrel band. Barrel bolster area shows original proofmarks “V P” with eaglehead. This area is also stamped twice with the mark “B2.” The same mark is found on the wood alongside the barrel tang. Barrel has the date “1839”.

Lockplate is marked “HARPERS / FERRY / 1831” behind the large, curved high-spur hammer and stamped with the small eagle motif / US in front of hammer. Stampings are strong. Forward end of the flat lockplate is beveled while the rear or tail section is tapered. All metal wears a light to dark patina.

Visible on some major components are small sub-inspector stamps. Original button-head ramrod is present but frozen in place and will require some force to remove.

Dark walnut stock appears to have never been cleaned and has the usual scuffs and dents to the wood. Stock is stamped with a number “56” behind the barrel tang and the side opposite the lock is stamped with a “V” and “J.A.B.” Weapon has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one at the triggerguard. Still attached to the musket is an altered and repaired Civil War sling.  [ad]
