MODEL 1816 A. W. WATERS MUSKET RECONVERTED TO FLINTLOCK, DATED 1834

$1,800.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 516-56

Here is an original smoothbore .69 caliber, Model 1816 musket by A. W. Waters reconverted from percussion to flintlock.

The beveled lockplate surface wears a pleasing, light gray patina and is stamped with a sharp two-line address “US / A. W. WATERS” in front of the hammer. Directly behind the hammer is a small stamping “MILLBURY / 1834.” Hammer and brass pan are period but the frizzen spring is a reproduction. Frizzen is original and operates properly but does rub slightly against the barrel.

Barrel wears a brown / gray patina with moderate pitting overall. Towards the breech area the pitting disappears and the metal is slightly smoother. This is where the nipple was removed when the weapon was reconverted to flint. Barrel has no rear sight and the blade front sight is integral to the upper band. There is also a bayonet lug atop the muzzle. Barrel is roughly 42” in length and is secured to the stock by three iron barrel bands and springs. Breech area is free of proof marks and pitting obscures the barrel date a little but it is still visible as “1834.” Mechanics are strong, very tight. Bore has light scattered pinprick pitting overall.

The black walnut stock is in good condition overall with just a few of the normal dings and dents accumulated with service and age. There are some minor small cracks and a “V” shaped crack running from the back of the lock almost to the escutcheon. This is a hairline crack. Also, a section of the stock between the barrel tang and the lock has been replaced. Left flat has a faint inspector’s cartouche. Left side of the stock has the initials “I M” carved shallowly which are difficult to see;  there may be additional letters but there is wear in that area. All screws show light wear. Butt tang is stamped with “US.” A large trigger guard holds the sling swivel while the middle barrel band secures the second swivel.

Steel, button-shaped ramrod is in good original condition and retains the treaded tip.  [ad]
