Presented here is one of those “Good and Serviceable Arms” produced at the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Often referred to as the “Mississippi Rifle,” this shoulder arm is a U.S. percussion rifle, Model 1841, and is one of 25,300 such rifles produced by that armory from 1846 to 1856. This single-shot, muzzleloading rifle features the original .54 caliber barrel bored out to .58 caliber as directed by the Secretary of War in July 1855 for all US shoulder arms.

Overall length of the weapon is 48½” and weighs almost ten pounds. The round barrel measures 33” in length. Barrel appears to have been cleaned at one time and exhibits mottling and scattered fine pitting overall. Rifling in bore suffers from pitting, surface grime and general filth. Date and proof marks at breech are not discernable due to discoloration. Rear sight is notched and front has small brass blade sight.

Case hardened lockplate features a spread eagle over “U.S.” forward of the hammer and to the rear of the hammer in three-lines is “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851.” All markings are strong and clear. Lockplate and hammer have no case colors remaining but show scattered areas of dark oxidation. Mechanics are strong and crisp.

Black walnut stock is fitted with brass furniture and a brass patchbox. All brass has acquired a rich, mellow bronze patina. The barrel bands are brass and are held in place by springs. Anchor pin on the front spring is broken but band sits properly. The stock’s surface is oil finished and exhibits a very pleasing patina. Stock bears normal dings and dents from use and storage. There are two old gouges in the breech area. One forward of the lock and one at rear. There are no inspector marks visible.

Original steel ramrod has tapered cylindrical brass head and threaded tip.

The Model 1841 percussion rifle performed well for the US military and later for the Confederacy. Here is a veteran Mississippi rifle in good condition overall.  [AD]
