NICELY REPAIRED REMINGTON M1863 PERCUSSION “ZOUAVE” RIFLE WITH MINTY BORE

$1,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3635

Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle produced by the Remington arms firm of Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. The Remington longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

Rifle measures 49.00 inches long with a 33.00 inch .58 caliber barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two-brass barrel bands.

Bore is “minty” with strong seven-groove rifling. Barrel retains almost all of its original bluing with light scattered oxidation. Top of barrel at breech is stamped with strong proof marks of “US / VP” with eaglehead.” Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks of “STEEL / R.S.L.” Top area of breech exhibits the date “186…” with the last number of the date totally missing. Looks as if the number was never stamped. A two-leaf rear sight and a blade front sight rest atop the barrel while a bayonet lug is attached to the barrel’s right side to accommodate the Remington saber bayonet.

Lockplate has a mottled gray color on its surface. Forward of the hammer is a faint spreadwinged eagle over “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” Stamped forward of the eagle is a strong “U.S.” with an equally strong “1863” behind the hammer. Nipple is original and very clean. Action works well. All furniture, including butt plate, triggerguard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patchbox are all of brass. Barrel bands show signs of having been cleaned. Patchbox has a spare reproduction nipple inside.

Walnut stock was cracked entirely across the wrist but was expertly repaired. A screw was run down through the top of the wrist for strength and the crack was repaired to the point that it is hardly noticeable. There is also an old deep chip on the left butt just forward of the buttplate shoulder. Chip meas. approx. 1.00 x 1.00 inch. There is also a 3.50 inch strip of wood missing between the two barrel bands along the right top edge of the stock. Left side of the butt has a nicely carved Roman numeral seventeen or “XVII.” The top of the wrist has a small circle of light wood putty that covers the head of the above mentioned screw. The carving, and chips are old and not recent as the wood surface matches throughout. Two government cartouches rest on the flat opposite the hammer. One is faint and one is readable with effort.

Longarm has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and a shortened threaded tip. Wood along ramrod channel has some old minor chips. Sling swivel is present at the triggerguard with the other at the upper barrel band. Screw heads on the weapon show light wear.

Item is a good shooter's weapon.  [ad]
