CONTRACT MODEL 1861 .58 CALIBER WINDSOR LOCKS MUSKET DATED 1862

$1,350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 667-37

Original Model 1861 .58 caliber percussion rifle-musket in nice condition overall. This musket was a product of either William Muir & Co. or Dinslow & Chase both of whom marked their lockplates “US / WINDSOR LOCKS.”

Barrel exhibits a pleasing medium gray patina with light mottling scattered throughout and light to moderate pitting around the breech. Correct front and rear sights are present. Left flat of the barrel at the breech has inspector’s marks of “VP” with eaglehead. Barrel date is worn with only the numeral “1” being visible. Bore is clean but rifling is nearly gone.

Musket retains its original lockplate with a good stamping of a spreadwinged eagle forward of the hammer with a crisp “US” over “WINDSOR LOCKS” beneath the bolster. Behind the hammer is an equally crisp date of “1862.” Nipple is original but is badly worn down. Bolster screw and hammer screw show light wear. Hammer stops at half-cock but will fall if trigger is squeezed. Works properly at full-cock.

Black walnut stock is in good condition overall but it does appear to have edges that are lightly worn. There are also a few dings, dents and nicks visible on the stock. One very faint government cartouche is visible on the flat opposite the hammer. There are no cracks.

The musket’s original tulip-head steel ramrod with swell retains its threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present and all three barrel bands are stamped with a “U.” Iron buttplate has strong “US” stamped on tang.

A nice original Civil War contract longarm. [ad]
