This weapon is in very nice condition and does not appear to have been cleaned or fooled with in any way.

The barrel is full length and wears a predominantly plumb brown patina as do all the metal parts of the weapon. Attached to the muzzle is an iron blade sight with a two leaf flip-up sight near the breech. The barrel has some light pitting limited to the area of the bolster and top of the breech. Barrel date of “1862” is clearly visible with a strong “VP” and eaglehead on the left flat. Tang screw shows light wear. Bolster screw is good. Nipple looks to be replacement but hard to tell for sure. Bore has good rifling with light dirt and needs punched.

Lockplate and hammer match the barrel in appearance as stated above. Below the bolster in two lines is a thin but readable “US” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Between this marking and the hammer is a spread-winged eagle. Detail is good but shield on the eagle’s chest is faint. The date “1862” is strongly stamped behind the hammer. The hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls properly when trigger is squeezed. Hammer screw is good. Lock screws show only light wear.

Walnut stock is in very good condition. The buttplate, triggerguard and barrel bands all match the lock and barrel in color. Buttplate has good “US” on tang. Both sling swivels are present. Stock has no cracks and only minor dings, dents and scratches consistent with light use. Wood at front of triggerguard has old, small chip. Stock flat opposite lock has two strong, clear government inspector’s cartouches. There is also a small “WT” at rear of triggerguard. Stock has some stray lines on wrist area where stain ran a little heavier when finished at armory.

The ramrod is correct with the tulip head and swell. Threads are present at opposite end.

This is a very attractive example of one of the more commonly used weapons of the Civil War.   [ad]
