TOWER-MARKED BRITISH PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD PERCUSSION MUSKET

$2,750.00 SOLD

Item Code: 218-453

This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket in very good condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army. Many P1853 muskets were also purchased and imported by the North and South during the American Civil War.

Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. Barrel surface is clean and wears a pleasing dark patina. There are several small dings on the barrel above the nose cap. Front blade sight is present as is correct leaf rear sight. Left side of breech is strongly stamped with Birmingham proofs and “25” signifying the weapon is .577 caliber. Top of breech and tang are stamped with “N   17”, possibly some unit designation. Bore is very clean with strong rifling. All barrel bands are present as well as both sling swivels. The lockplate surface is dusky gray. Lock markings are the standard Queen’s crown minus the “VR” behind the hammer with block letters “TOWER” under “1863” forward of the hammer. Mechanics are strong and all screw heads are good.

Brass butt plate, trigger guard, and nose cap exhibit a fairly clean yellow color. Black walnut stock is strong.  Stock has a moderate number of dings, dents and scratches consistent with age. No visible cracks. The stock bears several stamps from maker’s and viewers. A circular Birmingham Small Arms Trade stamp is on the right side of the shoulder stock near the butt plate. The Birmingham furnisher’s stamp “COOPER & GOODMAN” appears on the bottom surface of the shoulder stock.  “C&G” also appears twice directly behind the trigger guard backstrap as does another viewer’s mark. The ramrod is a reproduction.

This is an attractive and very nice example of a Civil War-era British Enfield musket.  [jet]
