MODEL 1863 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET TYPE-1 DATED 1863

$695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3519

The barrel has not been touched and has moderate to heavy mottling throughout with heavy pitting and dirt built-up in the area of the breech which has obliterated the barrel date. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the rear sight is missing the two flip up leaves. The left flat of the breech is strongly stamped with “VP” and an eaglehead. The eagle on the bolster is present in outline only with the rest being covered with pitting and surface rust. Nipple is dirty and shows wear. Bore has no rifling and is very dirty. There also appears to be scattered pitting.

The lockplate has a nice dark patina with strong stampings of a spread-winged eagle and “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer with “1863” strongly stamped behind it. Action is crisp and works properly. Lockplate screws and hammer screw are very good.

The wood stock is in overall good condition and may have been lightly cleaned. The flat opposite the lock shows no signs of a cartouche. There are some minor dings and dents from age and storage but no cracks. Otherwise the stock is presentable in appearance.

The iron buttplate, triggerguard and barrel bands have not been touched and match the other iron on the weapon. The buttplate has a crisp “US” stamped on the tang while each band has a fair to good “U” stamping. The bands are held in place by screws and not band springs which is correct for the Type 1.  Both sling swivels are present.

The original straight shanked tulip head ramrod is present and complete with threaded tip with a screw-on brass cover. It surface matches the rest of the iron furniture on the rifle.  [ad]
