An original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber, rifled musket in good condition. The metal surfaces all wear a salt and pepper appearance.

Barrel surface is as described above and wears a pleasing mild sheen with pinprick pitting, especially on the bolster. Proofmarks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are clear on the breech as is the date “1848” stamped on the barrel tang. Barrel also exhibits the small Harper’s Ferry mark “A R / P” forward of the proofmarks. Musket also retains its blade front sight on the upper barrel band and is fitted with a rear sight with flip up leaf. Bore is clean with only very small amounts of light dirt. Rifling is very good. Should clean to be excellent.

Lock has a faint spreadwinged Eagle over small “US” forward of the hammer and “HARPERS / FERRY / 1848” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple and hammer screw have been replaced. Mechanics are strong and crisp and work properly.

Black walnut stock is in good original condition and exhibits just a few light dings. There is one closed “U” shaped crack running from behind the nipple around to an area behind the barrel proof marks. The stock has never been cleaned or sanded. All the wood lines along the barrel and the raised flat opposite the stock are good. No cartouche marks are visible on the stock flat. Ramrod channel has some minor dents and chips from age and use.

There is no “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. The area where it would be appears to have been rubbed or worked to remove it. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with recess in head and threaded tip.

A good representative of the M1842 Harper’s Ferry rifled musket.  [ad]
