TOWER-MARKED BRITISH PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD PERCUSSION MUSKET

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 934-25

This original British longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 Type III rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in very good condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that was imported by the North and South during the Civil War.

Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. The lockplate surface is dark gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered pitting. Lock markings are the standard Victoria’s “crown” back of the hammer and numbers & block letters “1862 / TOWER.” Mechanics are strong. Barrel surface is smooth. It looks to have been buffed long ago to smooth some of the pitting but now has the same dark patina as other gun metal. Viewer’s marks are faint on the barrel breech but the “25” representing .577 caliber is visible. The bore is clean with just scattered hints of oxidation. Rifling is still good. Long range sight has some pitting. Has original ramrod, barrel bands, and sling swivels. All brass furniture exhibits a mellow patina. Black walnut stock is strong with a clean surface.  No cracks but stock does show minor dings, especially on flat opposite lockplate. Round Birmingham Small Arms Trade stamp is clearly visible on right side of shoulder stock.

A clean Civil War Enfield rifle.  [jet]
