Item Code: 934-26

Model 1816, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. Dated 1830 and converted to percussion. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. The barrel was rifled. Bore is clean with light rifling. No rear sight was added. There are numerous marks on the breech and tang. Nice viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech with small “B  17” along with other random number/letter stamps. The breech plug tang features the year “1830” and “B  17” appears again. The original ramrod is present and is complete with the threads. The “button” head of the ramrod has been milled out to ram Minie balls and was done when the barrel was rifled. The hammer and lockplate are in nice condition. The US and eagle are stamped strong in front of the hammer as is the “SPRING / FIELD / 1830” that appears behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate shows no pitting and is boldly stamped “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, nose cap, and swivels are present and in good condition. Several of the pieces bear small letter inspector stamps. All gun metal is fairly bright and clean with areas of tarnishing and light speckling.

The walnut stock is in very good condition with only very minor dings and dents; two small (old) chips missing along edges of the ramrod channel just behind the nose band. Two oval inspector cartouches are located on the flat opposite the lockplate. Another is partially visible on the underside of the “wrist” about 1 ½” behind the trigger guard backstrap. Other random numbers are stamped in into the stock, most notable is another “B  17” along the side of the barrel breech tang. Gunstock is solid with original color and finish.

This is a very good example of an 1816 flintlock musket that was converted to percussion.   [jet]
