MODEL 1842 HARPERS FERRY RIFLED MUSKET WITH BAYONET

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 934-02

Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. The barrel was later rifled, rear sight added, and ramrod altered. Nice viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech. The breech plug tang features the year “1847”. The original ramrod is present. The smoothbore ramrod was altered by milling out the end to accommodate a minie ball. The threaded end has some flat, hammered spots and there are moderate scrapes/scratches on the swelled end. The hammer and lockplate are in nice condition. The US and eagle are almost completely worn away in front of the hammer. “HARPERS / FERRY / 1847” is stamped clearly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate is clean and stamped “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, and swivels are present and in good condition. A piece of copper has been braised to the original sight on the nose cap. All gun metal is clean with a light gray color with areas of tarnishing and light speckling/surface finger prints.

The walnut stock is in very good condition with only minor dings and dents. No cartouche is visible. Gunstock is solid with original color and finish.

Accompanying bayonet fits the musket perfectly. The bayonet is in very good condition, stamped “US” and with working locking ring. Clean metal surfaces.

This is a good example of an 1842 smoothbore (that was later rifled) complete with bayonet.   [jet]
