Item Code: 934-06

This Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 caliber smoothbore musket was altered from flintlock to percussion. The musket has a 42” barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Bore is dirty. Barrel has no rear sight as normal and a small, blade-shaped, brass front sight mounted on the double upper barrel band. Small bayonet lug mounted on top of barrel at muzzle. Left barrel facet exhibits the proof marks “P / V / eagle head.” Barrel breech tang is stamped with a worn, partial date “183_.” Lockplate is strongly marked “HARPERS / FERRY / 1837” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. Forward of the hammer the “spread winged eagle / U.S.” is likewise strong. Frizzen pan space is filled with brass plug. Flat lockplate front is beveled while the rear or tail section is rounded to a smooth point. Missing a ramrod. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one at the trigger guard bow. Butt plate is marked with a weak, horizontal “US” on the tang. All gun metal is dark and untouched and in very good condition.

Black walnut stock has original color and finish. Normal scuffs and dents to the wood from age and use. There are two old drips of red paint running down the stock at the middle barrel band. Visible on the stock flat behind the sideplate is a marking “A R / V” and another “JAS”. “WRY” is stamped on the underside of the “wrist” just behind the trigger guard backstrap.  This stock is in very good condition.

Accompanying bayonet fits on the musket perfectly. This style has a gutter on the top flat of the blade. Stamped “U.S / _ M” (where second line is worn) on the blade. Smooth finish with gray mottled color. A manufacturing flaw, appearing like a crack, is located on the underside of the blade about 1 ½” from the elbow. This appears to be a casting or tempering flaw.  A nice bayonet.

A great, untouched Harpers Ferry conversion musket with bayonet!  [jet]
