HALF-STOCK PERCUSSION RIFLE BY PLATH OF NEW YORK

$595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4663

Rifle has an overall length of 46.50 inches. The octagon barrel is .45 and meas. approx. 31.50 inches long. Barrel retains almost 100% of its original blue which is now turning a plumb brown. Rear sight is a mortised notch and the front sight has a mortised iron base and a long thin iron blade sight. Top flat of the barrel approx. 2.50 inches behind the rear sight is marked “C. PLATH / NEW YORK 1.” The name “C. PLATH” is double stamped. Nipple and barrel tang section were screwed into the breech as evidenced by a seam line running in front of the original nipple and bolster. The barrel is anchored to the stock by a tang screw at the breech and an iron pin passing through the stock forearm. Pin whole has silver escutcheons on each side. Bore is too narrow for a bore light but what can be seen of it looks very good with strong rifling and light dust.

Lock is elongated with a flat serpentine hammer. Both appear to have been casehardened but are now turning dark. Action has double-set triggers and works properly.

Walnut stock has brass triggerguard and buttplate. Triggerguard is scalloped providing two finger rests. Buttplate has and elongated telescoped tang. The wood of the half-stock shows the usual dings, dents and scratches consistent with use and age. Forend is carved into a pronounced rolled edge. It also has a slight raised area just forward of the bolster. The left side of the butt has a large raised cheek rest.  Stock has a closed but slightly raised “V” shaped crack running from the edge of the lockplate to the barrel tang.  [ad]
