CLASSIC PRUSSIAN POTSDAM MODEL 1809 PERCUSSION MUSKET

$1,100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 934-12

This original German longarm is a .72 caliber, Potsdam Model 1809 smoothbore musket in good condition. Musket measures a total length of almost 57” with a 41¼” long barrel and has been converted from flint to percussion.

The lockplate surface is semi-bright and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered fine rust pitting and mottling. Lockplate has a curved tail that terminates into a small point that differentiates it from the later 1839 model. Markings are standard with none found behind the hammer. Forward of the hammer markings are sharp and feature the Prussian crown over markings strongly stamped “DANZIG” over “1830.”

Barrel top facet is stamped “45”. Left facet marked “1830 / crown / F.W./P.” Mechanics are stiff but work properly. Barrel surface has been lightly cleaned at one time and now has a gray sheen with scattered pitting, especially at the breech. Rear sight is notch screwed to barrel tang. Barrel is secured to the stock via three brass bands retained by springs. Upper brass band is double-strapped and mounts the front sight. Bayonet attaches by Laukart mechanism. Bore is dirty and needs cleaned.

Brass trigger guard has its iron sling swivel while the center band has the other. All brass wears a mellow bronze patina. Finials of the trigger guard and the toe of the butt plate terminate in distinct three-pointed ends. Butt plate is stamped with numerous stampings including: “45,” over “5 LWR” over “8C.”

Black walnut stock with its recessed cheek piece is handsome and strong. Wood surface is dark and uncleaned. Stock does show minor dings, dents and light scuffs from age and use. There are also two or three small closed age cracks on top of the butt but nothing serious and a small chip at rear of barrel tang.

Tapered iron ramrod is original.

With the weapon is an iron triangular socket bayonet that fits the muzzle properly. Iron is heavily mottled. Blade flat is stamped with what looks to be the letter “I” in a depressed oval with smaller indecipherable markings around it.  [ad]
