Model 1842, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. The bore is clean with minor spots of pitting. No rear sight. Worn viewer’s proof with little of the eagle head visible. Also stamped with “P B / P” in small letters in front of the viewer’s proof. The breech plug tang features only “1” remaining of the date stamp. Original ramrod is present and is complete with the threads. The hammer and lockplate are in nice condition with bright finish. The US and eagle are strongly stamped in front of the hammer. “SPRING / FIELD / 1849” is stamped boldly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate is bright and stamped with “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, trigger guard, nose cap, and swivels are present and in good condition. One of the band springs looks to have been repaired. Several of the pieces bear small letter inspector stamps. All gun metal is bright with areas of tarnishing and light speckling/surface rust.

The walnut stock exhibits an attractive color and finish. There appears to be one repaired break between the nose cap and second barrel band. Repaired very well and only visible under close inspection. Other than that the wood shows only the minor dings and dents from age and use. Inspector cartouche is located on the flat opposite the lockplate.

This is a good example of an 1842 smoothbore musket, dated 1849.   [jet]
