MODEL 1861 TRENTON CONTRACT RIFLE MUSKET, DATED 1863/64

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4608

This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in fine condition. Produced at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton.

All gun metal on this rifle wears a bright, cleaned finish. This weapon was used and shows evidence of old wear and pitting overall. The “cleaning” of the iron parts has minimized the appearance of this wear. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / TRENTON” in front of the hammer and “1864” behind hammer. A worn spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. The 40” long barrel exhibits scattered areas of very light pitting, mostly near breech. Has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel is dated “1863” at the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” on left facet of the breech are sharp. Barrel bore clean, but interior surfaces are pitted. Moderate rifling remains. Screw heads are very good. Bolster “clean-out” screw shows the most wear. Butt plate strongly stamped with “US”. Musket also exhibits small sub-inspector stamps on major components. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in good condition.

Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits two government cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only very minor dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains a very attractive color and finish.

A fine representative contract musket of the Civil War.  [jet]
