Item Code: 172-4606

This longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type 1, single-shot muzzleloader. This “Springfield” M1863 musket was actually a product of the Whitney Arms Company after the Civil War. Manufactured using surplus Springfield parts.

Gunmetal is clean and was blued by Whitney. Overall featuring a nice dark patina. Lock surface wears a dark patina. “1863” stamped behind the hammer. Lock markings with the “Eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” are worn. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer with its beveled edges has the same smooth patina as the rest of the lock plate components. Breech area of the barrel shows considerable wear and pitting. Eagle motif visible on bolster. Several nicks and dings appear on the barrel. No date visible. Viewer’s proof marks are on the barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight. Barrel tang shows some wear and tear (probably from someone trying to remove breech plug). Mechanics crisp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. This type musket was produced without barrel band springs. The three screw-tightened barrel bands are correct and in place. Retains its original steel straight-shank ramrod that has had the threaded end hammered down. Iron butt plate is unmarked.

Black walnut stock is beautiful and appears never to have been cleaned. Has very few of the usual dings and scratches associated with normal with age and use. Two faint government inspector cartouches can be seen on the flat opposite the hammer. Right side of the shoulder stock is stamped with large, spread-winged eagle and “WHITNEY ARMS CO.”

This is good representative Springfield rifle-musket as assembled by Whitney after the Civil War  [jet]
