RIFLED POMEROY MODEL 1840 MUSKET CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION

$1,975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4609

Weapon has an overall length of 58.00 inches. It has a round, rifled, .69 barrel finished bright that meas. approx. 42.00 inches. Barrel surface is lightly mottled. There is no rear sight. Front sight is mounted on the front double band with a bayonet lug present below the muzzle. Weapon was converted in the Belgian style with a hole being drilled in the top of the breech and the nipple added. In this area the barrel is crisply stamped “U.S.” / “N.W.P.” / letter “p” in a stamped circle. Barrel date is also crisply stamped on the tang and reads “1842.” Rifling in the bore is good but it needs a light cleaning.

Lock has a beveled rounded front with a pointed rear that is almost flush with the wood. Hammer and lock are bright with light mottling. Very strong eagle over “L. POMEROY” is stamped in front of the hammer. Behind the hammer is a thing “1844” over “U.S.” Action is strong and crisp. Original nipple is present.

Walnut stock is in good condition. It is dark and untouched as far as cleaning goes. There are several carvings in the wood. The right side of the butt has an old carved line running horizontally for approx. 9.00 inches with two vertical lines crossing it 2.75 inches apart. Below this, if one catches the light right, there appears to be a lightly scratched word but it is unreadable. Left side of butt has a large “V” scratched into the wood and a carved “H” on the flat opposite the lock. There are no cartouche marks and no visible cracks. There are numerous small dings, dents and scratches which are common to a weapon of this age.

Trumpet head ramrod has recessed face. Rammer is very tight in its channel and could not be drawn to view the threaded tip. The next owner will have to coax it out. Ramrod channel does have one old chip approx. 3.00 inches long but the wood surface matches the rest of the stock perfectly.

All three barrel bands, buttplate and triggerguard match the rest of iron surfaces. Both sling swivels are present. Buttplate bears a strong “US” stamping.  [ad]
