Model 1842, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. The barrel is a full 42” in length. The bore shows light surface rust with minor pitting. No rear sight. Barrel is a nice even brown color with the expected pitting around the breech and bolster. Viewer’s proof with eagle head. The breech plug tang features the date “1852” Original unaltered smoothbore ramrod is present and is complete with the threads. The hammer shows some pitting. The lockplate is in nice condition with dark brown color. The US and eagle are stamped in front of the hammer. “SPRING / FIELD / 1846” is stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate is pitted and lightly stamped with “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, trigger guard, and nose cap are present and in good condition. Lead swivel is good, while swivel on trigger guard is broken. All gun metal is equally dark with scattered pitting and light surface rust.

The walnut stock exhibits an attractive original color and finish. The wood shows the moderate dings and dents from use and age. Two inspector cartouches are visible.

This is a clean example of the Model 1842 smoothbore musket.   [jet]
