Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry. The barrel is a full 42” in length and is smooth and bright. Nice inspector’s initials “A R / P” and viewer’s proof with eagle head on left breech. The breech plug tang features the year “1845”. The original smoothbore ramrod is present. The hammer and lockplate are in very nice condition. The small eagle and “US” are stamped in front of the hammer. “HARPERS / FERRY / 1845” is stamped clearly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate is clean and stamped “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, and swivels are present and in good clean/bright condition.
The walnut stock is in very good condition with only minor dings and dents except for a couple of slightly deeper gouges on the flat opposite the lock plate. No cartouche is visible. Two hairline cracks running out from the butt plate (from lower screw area) on right surface only, otherwise gunstock is solid with original color and finish.
This is a pretty example of an 1842 smoothbore made at Harpers Ferry. [jet]
