Under the bolster is clearly stamped, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”.  Behind the hammer is the date, “1862”. The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel shows no pitting around the breech and bolster and is clearly stamped “1862” at the top of the breech. Barrel tang is stamped “15”. Proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” are clear on left facet of the breech. Barrel bore is clear with decent rifling and light pitting throughout. Screw heads are in good shape. Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a worn-down threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in very good condition.

Black walnut full stock is in good condition overall. Has clean edge contours. Stock exhibits one very light inspector cartouche on the flat. There are no cracks and only minor dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains dark original color and finish.

A good, original example of a true Springfield-made musket of the Civil War.  [jet]
