M1816 ‘WICKHAM’ TYPE III FLINTLOCK MUSKET

$2,450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 482-422

Longarm specimen is an original M1816, musket made by Marine T. Wickham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1813, Wickham was a government inspector of arms at a U.S. arsenal, and later was listed as a gunsmith in Maryland in the musket manufacturing business. The flintlock longarm was never converted to cap and ball. Musket is a .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader that retains all its original parts in good condition.

This 58” long musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the stock by three iron bands. The breech tang is stamped “1836” and the left side of the breech is stamped “V P” with the eagle head motif. The cock (hammer), frizzen, brass pan, feather spring, and screws are in good condition. A large trigger guard secures the sling swivel while the middle barrel band supports the second swivel. Bore is dark with light rust pitting that should clean up nicely. Many of the small pieces have sub-inspector marks. Iron butt plate stamped “US”. Has a complete button-head ramrod. Gunmetal has a dark browned color.

The iron lock is flat in the front and slightly rounded at the tail and measures about 6¾” long. Lockplate is stamped “PHILA / 1835” behind the hammer and “US / M.T. WICKHAM” between the hammer and feather spring.  Mechanics are very good, tight and crisp.

Black walnut stock is dark and in overall good condition. Very minor dings and scrapes. One hairline crack runs for about ½” from the butt plate tang and another runs back through the upper lock screw on the left flat. Another crack runs back from the barrel tang. There are a number of stamps on the stock. Two pairs of letters lightly stamped on the underside behind the trigger guard tang.  A “V” and three initials are found at the back of the flat on the left side.

This musket is a nice M1816 non-altered Wickham flintlock musket typically used by militia in the early 19th century.  [jet]
