Item Code: 982-11

This rifle is the second type version of the Allin conversion trapdoor in .50 caliber centerfire. The breech loading “Trapdoor” mechanism, designed by Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin of the Springfield Armory was adopted in 1865 and 5000 M-1861 rifle-muskets were converted to this system in .58 rimfire. The second conversions of 1866 differs in caliber from the previous model being reduced to .50 caliber by the bore being enlarged and a liner tube inserted and brazed in place. Other changes that were added are the lengthening of the bolt, a firing pin spring and stronger internal extraction system, which dispensed with the rack and pinion type. This rifle is the Model 1864 type II musket that has been converted to this system. Records indicate the total numbers altered at Springfield were 25,000 rifles.

This specimen is a shorter, two-band arsenal conversion. Dated 1864 on the lock plate and 1866 on the receiver. The metallic components -- barrel, receiver, barrel bands, cleaning rod, trigger guard and butt plate -- exhibit surface pitting and with a dark patina. The lock plate still shows a nice eagle motif and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” marking. Lock action is still tight and crisp and the receiver mechanism operates well. Butt plate is marked with a strong “US”.  This specimen has only two barrel bands with the front sling swivel being attached to the upper band. Where the middle band once was located, a sliver of wood was used to fill the slot where the band spring once was.

As for the walnut stock, it has been sanded and refinished. There are only minor dings from age. No cracks.   [jet]
